Summary

TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is Germany’s official standardised German language proficiency exam for international students and researchers who wish to study at German universities. Administered by the TestDaF-Institut in Bochum, the exam is recognised by all German universities and research institutions as proof of the language competence required for full academic participation.

The TestDaF covers four skills — reading, listening, writing, and speaking — and is assessed across three levels: TDN 3, TDN 4, and TDN 5. Most German universities require a minimum of TDN 4 in all sections for admission, though requirements vary by institution and course of study.

TestDaF is offered multiple times per year at certified testing centres across Germany and in over 80 countries worldwide. For international students living in Germany who have not yet met the language requirement for their chosen degree programme, TestDaF provides a structured and academically rigorous pathway to proving their proficiency.

Preparation materials, past papers, and an online preparation platform (TestDaF.net) are available to help candidates prepare effectively. Results are typically returned within six weeks of the examination date.
